School Pupils Lead Campaign Against Bullying

25/09/2006

Three school pupils will see their artwork produced as the official Anti Bullying Week posters for 2006, to raise the profile of bullying and the effect it has on children, after winning the national Anti Bullying Week poster design competition, sponsored by Trutex. 15 year old Rebecca Cadman of Cloughside School, Manchester, ten year old Tom Langley of Benedict Biscop CE Primary School, Sunderland and 15 year old Christine Postlewhite of Greenbank Residential School, Northwich, Cheshire will all have their poster designs displayed in schools throughout the country to mark Anti Bullying Week, which takes place between 20 – 24 November 2006.

The national poster design competition was created by the Anti Bullying Alliance, which aims to reduce bullying and create safe environments in which children and young people can live, grow, play and learn, and was sponsored by Trutex, Britain’s most well known schoolwear brand.

With over 1,000 entries, the judging panel – which included pupils from Clitheroe Royal Grammar School and Edisford Primary School, both in Clitheroe, Lancashire plus representatives from Trutex and the Anti Bullying Alliance - selected the winners from two age categories: under 11 years and 12 to 18 years old.

Winner of the 12 to 18 year category, Rebecca Cadman of Cloughside School in Prestwich, Manchester created a poster featuring a chalk board with thought provoking statements on the incidence of bullying and the importance of reporting it, whilst the under 11 years category winner, Tom Langley of Benedict Biscop CE Primary School in Moorside, Sunderland, adopted a recycling approach, converting bullies into friends for his winning design. Due to the high number of entries a special award was given to Christine Postlewhite of Greenbank Residential School in Northwich, Cheshire for her creative efforts.

Gill Frances, Anti Bullying Alliance manager, said:

"We're absolutely delighted that so many schools took part in the competition. The number of entries demonstrates that schools are taking the issue of bullying very seriously and are working hard to prevent it. The posters also demonstrated the creativity of children and young people and their own desires to make bullying a thing of the past. We hope schools will build on this work by participating fully in Anti Bullying Week 2006."

Commenting on the competition, Clare Rix, Trutex marketing director said:

"We've been astounded by the level and standard of entries from children of all ages. Bullying is an issue which all children can relate to whether it is something that they fear, have experienced or know of victims and this was clearly visible in all the designs. We hope that the competition has gone someway to raising awareness of the damage bullying can cause and the help that is available for all those who are effected by it."
